It’s a question we’re often asked so we thought we’d give you some pointers.
As we all know weather patterns globally are currently pretty unpredictable so the following is based on what you can typically expect. You just need to be prepared for changes. Remember there’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing!
Costa Rica has two seasons, ‘Dry’ and ‘Green’. As Drake Bay is in the rainforest it has a bit more variety. So, when to visit?
The best time to visit depends on what you want to do whether it’s hiking, sport fishing, sunbathing, snorkelling, SCUBA, nature watching, horse riding, swimming or just chilling.
Even during green season Drake is a perfect place to visit. Rain is usually only in the afternoon so you can get your exploring done in the morning and chill in the afternoon. We love the rain here, it’s why it’s a jungle paradise. Nature also loves the rain. It produces beautiful flowers, fruit and vegetation which, in turn, attracts insects, birds and mammals. It’s never cold. Visiting outside peak periods is not only more environmentally friendly, it also means better deals on international air travel and accommodation.
Whales, Dolphins and Fishing
We’re blessed to witness two humpback whale migrations each year. July to October for the Southern Migration and November to April for the Northern Migration. Dolphins are a lot more frequent with Spotted, Bottlenose and Roughtooth Dolphins inshore and Spinner Dolphins offshore looking for tuna. Sport fishing is good all year round, it’s why we moved here.
Month by Month
The driest months are January, February and March these are the most popular a great time for snorkelling and SCUBA at Caño Island.
April is usually host to Easter or Holy Week ‘Semana Santa’. A time for Costa Ricans to celebrate and spend time with their families.
May and December are transitional months these are our favourite. The flowers, birds and wildlife in general are at their most beautiful. The perfect time to visit Corcovado National Park and the Terraba-Sierpe National Wetlands.
June, July and August offer a lot of sunshine with intermittent rain that doesn’t usually last long.
The rain is more frequent from September to November with October being the wettest. In 2024, Corcovado National Park is closing for October.
Most importantly Drake is never too busy. Even at the most popular times of year, with our miles of unspoilt coastline, you’ll find a beach all to yourself.
Now you’re armed with all the information you need, you just need to book your place. We hope to see you soon.
